Policy Development: Local Food Systems, Sustainable Farming, and Sustainable Communities
Agriculture policy, at both state and federal levels, has a huge—and often negative—impact on food and agricultural systems. For this reason, policy to support building local food systems is one of NYSAWG's main priorities. As we pursue change through both the state and federal levels, we are partnering with the Hunger Action Network of New York (HANNYS) to push for a New York State Food Policy Council. A Food Policy Council, which has been proposed by Assembly Member Felix Ortiz and Senator Cathy Young, would develop comprehensive, coordinated state food policies with the goal of providing a plentiful, accessible, affordable, safe and nutritious food supply, comprised of locally produced foods as much as possible, so that all citizens of the State are able to eat a healthy diet and avoid hunger and have the opportunity to support a vibrant local farm and food economy. At the federal level, we are engaged in research and advocacy for substantial structural change in the 2007 Farm Bill, while at the same time preserving vital social safety net programs like food stamps. More federal and state policy information can be found on our Policy page.
